We're now one-month into first grade and things are great Crohn's-wise. Birthday parties are kind of brutal, as cake frosting seems to send our son into a flare-up. A few days of EleCare fixes him right up and he's back on track GI, growth, and emotionally. We had a 3-4 day stint of sole enteral nutrition last week. It was a tiny battle, but he gets it and it helps him. His teacher(s) admire his ability to cope with the treatment and be an advocate for himself. This year, he has a little girl in his class with a severe peanut allergy. This has really helped him understand that other people have issues too (not just him). Sometimes, you just have to deal with what life throws at you!

We have not been back to the GI doc in a year. We will probably go for a visit in the next month or two just to keep the EleCare covered by prescription -- but I totally expect my son's lab work to be awesome, given how he is presenting.

  1. Hello my daughter who was recently diagnoised with crohns in october is also in the first grade. Shes been emotionally distant from other kids at school. She has acid reflux and they have her on prevacid but it doeant seem to be working. Do you know anything else that would help her? Also food is a big problem because she doesn't like all the healthy food. Do you have any ideas? Thanks so much!

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's CD diagnosis. Prevacid was a bit of a disaster for us and seemed to induce as many symptoms as it relieved. What I recall is that one key reason to give Prevacid to CD patients is to counteract the effects of CD medications that may cause acid reflux as a side effect. My son used to say that his tongue felt "heavy" and would complain about the taste of foods after taking it.

Once we stopped taking prednisone and other medications, we stopped the Prevacid as well. Certain food combinations clearly still give acid reflux... tomatoes, cinnamon, rich sugary foods... probably many of the things that would give me acid reflux as well. However, the acid reflux episodes are now few and far between.

For acid reflux, avoidance of irritating foods seems like the best course of action... unless, of course, the reflux is due to a medication or is a symptom of a CD flare.

If and when you figure out how to get your daughter to eat healthy foods - you can write a book and become an instant millionaire! : )

    Hi there!
I've just found your blog and would love to chat with you regarding your son and his diagnosis. I have 3 boys, 2 of which I suspect have Crohn's. One of them has been on Elecare for about 9 months now and has done so wonderfully! He's 4. My other son is 16 months and is showing early symptoms... I'm navigating the system and trying to get Seattle Children's to understand that his symptoms are real and in need of attention. They have put us on Elecare, and for that I'm SO grateful! But otherwise have been fairly unworried or concerned about diagnosing him with anything. I'd love to talk about your experiences and see if we should pursue other tests or just continue as we are now... =) Thanks for your time...
